Dimmer?

Are we imagining it, or is Omaha's best-known airhead, John Knicely, burning through a lot of vacation days lately?

Since last summer, it seems that, if it's not a sweeps period, J-Pa is nowhere to be found on Channel Sux. Does he know something we don't? (It's not as if he could be exhausted from all the mental energy he puts into his work.)

On the surface, his frequent absences are strikingly (and tantalizingly) reminiscent of the way turkey-necked former anchor Pat Persaud mowed through her vacation time in the months leading up to her "retirement" back in 2005.

With the way SuxNews has been shedding employees of late, ya gotta wonder. And hope.

There's not that much more to say about WOWT. They've shown time and time again that they don't care about putting together a good news organization. The problem is, no one else in town is much (or any) better. Everyone's phoning it in: staffing their organizations with people who really should be working in East Toadstool, BFE paying their dues, trying to run various "i-something-or-other" reports from people not trained as journalists, begging for Facebook posts and running those, or when all else fails, trotting their own reporters out with an iPhone to bring back something that looks like it belongs on a 10-year-old's social network page. Sadly, they're taking their cues from CNN (iReports - good grief), and consultants, who seem to think good television news is supposed to cater to the lowest common denominator, like Survivor, or DWTS. I've kind of had it with all of them.

Oh Ted, you spoke too soon. While I didn't see a bunch of tape on Brady's baby (maybe it was there like it was for Malorie), KETV did talk up the website, saying it's loaded with all you'd ever want to see of the new mother. I'm glad all are doing well, but yawn.

Can somebody please drum up some footage of the newest Channel Sux anchor, Chase Moffitt? What was the rationale behind this one? I haven't seen anybody struggle this much to get through a sentence since....well...ever. This guy is a bumbling moron.

Fire Jamie McCucheon, and make Jodi Baker the weekend anchor? Ugh, can we say downgrade?

Humor, I haven't been watching them much, but after your comment, I had to check out the weekends at 6 again. He's a new local kid. I was trying to cut him some slack because he's new, but this morning he was just horrible. Horrible.

This is part of the crapification of WOWT. They've hired some newbie who should be cutting his teeth in Waving Grass, Kansas instead of someone who's got the experience and talent to step into a market the size of Omaha's coverage area. We're not Chicago or NY, but we're not Coal Fork, WV either.

Replacing the technical expertise and discriminating judgment of a human crew to save a few bucks, hiring newbies who will work CHEAP to save a few more, it's the classic death-spiral of a business that's not an accounting firm being run by bean-counters who don't really know jack-shit about either journalism or broadcasting. To their way of thinking, everything can be quantified. They can't put a definitive value on intangibles like reputation and trust, so those elements are ignored.

You know, the other day in passing (at a bar where the TV was on 6) I did hear Andrea Rich state that part of the reason we'll be able to reach warmer temps this week is that we have more sunlight to work with - DUE TO THE TIME CHANGE! Jesus H. More sunlight at different angles due to the shifting of the planet in relation to the Sun as seasons change is correct, but an extra hour of sunlight today versus yesterday? Really? Good God.

The threshold has been exceeded, WOWT. You just suck too much.

No, Omaha is neither NYC nor Tumbleweed, Wyoming. The problem is that the consumer of the product doesn't care or maybe doesn't know that local news CAN be better. They want John Knicely because they know him and have for a long time. Same with Flowers. "It's always been this way so we want it this way." They don't want to remember a time when Channel 6 was a leader in journalistic integrity.
As I've said here before I moved to a larger city and have the luxury of watching real journalists doing real news and relevant, well researched, well reported stories. Banter? Yep. REAL banter that you don't need to hurl while watching.

I finally had some time to copy some new pictures. I've been so busy I haven't been watching much Sux lately. I'm sure I've been missing so many quality broadcasts. Someone I work with mentioned that the "current" time in the lower left corner was an hour behind on Sunday after the time change. I didn't catch it, but I'm not surprised.

Just returned from the California coast recently. The local news is so much better than what we are faced with daily. There's no lisps, low-talkers, annoying personalities, and best of all, no "begging for Facebook posts". No real scare tactics were used in the weather. It was just direct & to the point news, properly given. Made me wish that the Omaha news was even a little similar.

Shoot, even *Kansas City* is vastly better. And Saint Louis makes Omaha look like a high school AV department...

I cringe every time I hear the words “Let’s hear what our Facebook friends are saying about this story!” It was bad enough when Channel 6 just had their “Six online” crap. Now we have to check in several times a newscast to hear people we’ve never met whining about the news. Even the usually awesome John Oakey is stuck doing some weekly thing called “Sound Off On Seven”. At least be honest and call the segment “Viewers Bitch For a While”

This is supposed to be the news, people…Not therapy.

If I owned a group of stations, (I'd be a bajillionaire, first of all, and could do as I pleased) I'd put together a decent product and then pimp it all over the market as an intelligent alternative to the illiterate crap that's out there. It would get viewers, and I could charge accordingly for the ad time. But in this town no one cares about actually being good. It's all bean counters cutting costs instead of investing in better products. That one-sided business view has killed TV news in this market. I'm getting more and more of my news from other sources.

Jodi whatever is a failed intern from Channel Seven. I know. I was there.

Speaking of dimmer... Knicely at the end of the newscast yesterday smugly throws out how many people believe the supermoon may have helped contribute to the earthquakes and tidal waves we have seen recently, completely disregarding the stories they ahd earlier in the week with the NASA scientists +others debunking that theory. He then comments "Do you think that this supermoon might have anything to do with the earthquake in Japan?" while his compatriots look blankly back at him.

Someone told me the robot wasn't doing the news this weekend at 6, so I checked it out Sunday. They had Jake Wasikowski anchoring. He changed expressions, blinked, looked down at copy now and again instead of staring into the prompter like a deer into headlights, and spoke conversationally, with a voice that had some inflection. He was just like a real person there! ;-) Nice job.

To the suits at WOWT: Please don't let Baker, McIntire, or Moffitt near the desk again, and for God's sake, find a few more Wasikowskis to try to build some competence back into your staff.

Dumb Anguish said...

Yeah I actually kind of like Jake Wasikowski also. He does a fairly decent job.

Which, of course, means his days at Channel 6 are already numbered.

OMG! Server issues at WOWT this afternoon! What? no online live chat?
Maybe they'll do something unique...like report some news for a change!

The people who run WOWT constantly find new ways to redefine the word stupid. They’re trying to give away tickets to Cirque de Soliel on their Facebook page, right?

So the contest goes something like: “Post the title of the ‘Most Popular’ story (from WOWT.com) here on the Facebook page. The first six people to do it win tickets!”…Or something.

Unfortunately the “most popular” story involved multiple shootings over the weekend. So you inevitably have people posting things on the WOWT Facebook page like: “Three teens wounded in shooting. I REALLY hope I win some tickets!”

So, long story short, Channel 6 has found a way to link-up multiple shootings with a chance to win Cirque de Soliel tickets…Classy!

Helio said...

And furthermore - if you are so moved by their stupidity & send the folks at WOWT an email you will be ignored. Go figure! Who wouldn't like some constructive criticism!

Remarkable news last night from Channel 6, The News You Trust:

Osbama bin Laden has been killed.

Must have been Osama's half-brother or something.
