Cost

Since KPTM is apparently willing to do anything to save a buck, perhaps instead of paying meteorologists, they can hire that octopus who predicted the World Cup winners. It'd probably be more accurate than Giggly Jim Flowers and his little sidekick, Seabiscuit, and considerably more watchable.

Last night was absolutely ridiculous. You expect Flowers and the people at 6 to interrupt the broadcast for every drop of rain that threatens to fall, but Randby's EVERY BIT as bad. With all the clowns that channel 7 had running around last night explaining that it was -- get this -- RAINING where they were, and also WINDY, one wonders if they're trying to outdo 6 in the stupid department.

Look guys, of course it's rainy and windy when a bit of a storm moves through. Tell us once, and run your crawl. But after that, until baseball-sized hail or a vortex shows up, leave us the hell alone. Give us credit for knowing what happens during a thunderstorm. And really, rehashing it all at 10 was amateur. We all knew a storm moved through, and that power was out in places, and branches would be down. It's not news. And you lose all credibility by crying the sky is falling at every storm.

Thank God for cable programming, or I'd have put my foot through the TV.

I'd watch Tyson Pearsol's weather "guesstimating" over most anyone elses in Omaha. Second only to Dean Wysoki's forecasts, in my opinion. Looks like Dean got out of TV while the getting was good.

I absolutely love Jim Liars new take on hail forecasts. What the hell is he doing? With every storm predicted; he predicts that we will have large hail during a two hour period and we've yet to see it. Predicting hail is like predicting tornado touch downs...the conditions may be right, but that doesn't mean we're going to get it. What an absolute joke! Quit trying to make the weather and just give us the damned information, willya!

And lest "Randy" Randby be left out; why does he always have to doff the jacket everytime severe weather hits? C'mon fella...yout thinking about going out and having a "throwdown" with the storm? Show some professionalism...keep the jackets on.

Why doesn't KETV just use their 7.2DT wx channel for all the "live" coverage? Leave the regular channel for just normal programming and run crawls at the bottom, especially for just severe t'storm warnings. If a tornado is spotted near the Omaha higher populated areas, then of course break-in live. Otherwise, tone it down a few notches!

I really like KETV, but I have to agree they are really giving WOWT a run for their money in the mass hysteria department when it comes to a freaking thunderstorm. I kept expecting to see Randby turn to the junior officers and shout “Battlestations!” Just calm down, dude. Take a deep breath. We’ll be alright. It’s a thunderstorm.

But I think its nice Mother Nature helps out Jim Flowers by having the bad weather between the 6pm and 10pm newscasts. I think she still feels bad about the time tornado struck Omaha at 1:00 in the morning and WOWT was showing a Western.

Exactly what Dumb Anguish said...Battlestations! Why not spice things up and have "red alert" for when a storm is heading for Omaha. Also, don't forget having the lights turn red in the studio or during the newcasts. Then, we can all brace ourselves for impact! I'd watch the news more often just to see this happen during a live show. All the anchors already go bonkers so no need to change that part.

FWIW, hail indicated by doppler radar is overdone most times. In fact, it really isn't hail that's being indicated on the radar screen. Simply, it's the density of liquid within the t'storm at that level in the atmosphere.

When it's very hot outside and the whole atmosphere is very warm (like it was that evening), it's very difficult to get large hail to reach the ground since most, if not all, of it melts.

That's why you can't always assume it's 1" hail like Jim says or any other on-air wx person for that matter. Depends on the state of the atmosphere. Plus, the time of year is also a factor. Large hail is more common in Mar-June, than July-Aug.

That's a bummer about KPTM cutting the local broadcast. I will say this, I had a problem with Tyson Pearsall's hair, going from professional one night to bed head the next. And I scoffed (at first) with his segment "Tyson's Weather School" but I will say this, I learned more from that segment once I started watching it than I have in YEARS of watching Jim Flowers masturbate behind the Doppler Sux-thousand radar screens. KPTM put together a decent broadcast, and their weather coverage was no exception. The only real gripe I ever had with KPTM was their x:30 bug on the HD channel because it caused a one second delay coming in and going out and changed the picture to the analog feed, then back to HD.

KPTM news, sorry to see you go. I hope you all land on your feet, maybe take over at Sux news and turn them back into a pre-Persaud product, except Megan "Bozo" Youker. She needs to read lines for Yo Gaba Gaba, not report any serious news. Or put her in writing/production, not delivery.

znk - Hate to say it but 7.2 was pulling a Flowers - showing a stupid movie - during the last "major event". Not sure why they hell they have a dedicated weather channel if they're not going to show...I dunno...weather??

Compared to the over-the-top coverage on Channel 3, KETV and WOWT seem quite tame in their severe weather coverage. At least 6 and 7 wait until there actually IS severe weather in the viewing area, unlike the desperados at 3 who feature "Severe Weather Alert Days" when the nearest threat of weather is way over in the badlands of South Dakota. I mean--WTF??? IS KMTV ND Al Karl is out of his mind?

OK folks...prepare for another round of weatherputz hysteria. Yesterday Flowers was talking about tonight like it was time to build an ark. If it's anything like his other doomsday bullshit hype jobs, we might expect upwards of a full inch of rain tonight, not to mention the possible constant presence of Jim (and his rival Randby) on camera, pre-empting regular programming because -- it's raining. Pretty soon they'll be interrupting for fog. The tools.

Say what you will about 6, but if you want a complete case study on why people are turning away from TV News, look no further than Action 3's "news coverage" of the Lincoln escapee Wednesday and Thursday. That was a completely shameful display on their part. And in this case, at least the ratings reflect that.

brandy...I didn't know about the movies being shown on Wxnow 7.2/Cox 123. I emailed Bill Randby and talked to him about it. He's not in control of what they show on Wxnow. It's a KETV decision to add more programming outside of weather 24/7.
