TONIGHT: Channel 3 Set Moves Into the 21st Century

After receiving a couple of tips from alert readers, we've done some digging and learned that KMTV will unveil a major overhaul of its newscasts tonight at 10. Among the changes will be a new name (Action 3 News) and a new set—said, by those who've seen it, to be very "contemporary."

We highly doubt, however, suggestions that Channel 3's "improvements" will include pixelating the face and digitally altering the voice of "Sports Director" (and, truth be told, entire sports staff) Travis Justice. That would just be wishful thinking. If we're lucky, though, they'll tell him to keep his opinions to himself and just give us the scores.

Ummmm. Wasn’t one of the newscasts, I want to say Channel 6’s called Action News 6 back in the late 70’s or early 80’s???

So shouldn’t the headline read… Channel 3rd upgrading to the latter part of the 20th centrury?

Nice Upgrade Channel 3rd!

Ohh Ted....

You shouldn't say those things about Travis. You might hurt his feelings and then he'll want to know who you are even more just so you two can call a truce.

Action News 6 I believe it was back in the day. Maybe Action News 3 is going after the oldies but goodies, retro news crowd. Any word on if Byron Wood or Gary Kerr will also be making cameos?

Seriously, has it goten that bad that no one at 3 remembers that was Channel 6's 'brand'. I mean Joe Jordan has been around long enough to remember that...

If your news name gets used in a parody of news... ala Ron Burgundy, you really shouldn't use it.

There must be more news names they could use.. how about Psuedo News 3, ThunderNews3, West of 72nd News 3, SwiftNews 3, We read it in first in the paper News3, 3 News People and Trav, Still better than 42News3.

A lot of local TV stations revive names used in the past in their markets--sometimes used by the station in question. Though I think KMTV has an uphill battle to get out of deep 3rd place, it isn't unheard of.

A classic example is KWCH (formerly KTVH) in Wichita, KS. They were once a 4th-place station (in a 3-station market). Then, back in 1983, they completely revamped every aspect of their newscast. They renamed their newscast "Eyewitness News", which they had used several years earlier, then dumped. Within a year of this revamping, they overtook the very competitive Wichita market and remain #1--and Eyewitness News--to this day.

So, who knows what will happen with KMTV. It will certainly be something to watch and critique in the days and months to come.

FIRST WARNING THREAT TRACKER. It's just so exciting. There's even a brand new color coded system that coincides with it. Almost like the terror threat system. They're on to something I think...

They should have just simplified the "branding" and gone with something like "CBS 3". I still think it's time that KETV put the 1970's brand "NewsWatch 7" out to pasture and go with ABC 7, or 7News. Just my 2 cents.
