KPTM Shakeup Underway?

An alert reader reports that KPTM has dismissed reporter Dave DeJohn, who is said to have told management that if he left, his wife, anchor Tracy Jacim would follow. Our source says that Jacim's year-long contract is set to expire this week and that this development suggests it won't be renewed at the behest of one party or another.

Hey, you hate to see someone lose their job but when you treat people like crap, it comes back to bite you. Hopefully they keep their attitudes in check in their next job. Good riddence to two pain in the bums.

Yes, dreams come true.
Farewell to the cantankerous duo. Looking forward to the day of flipping through the channels and not being scared out of my wits by their terrible interpretation of news.
To be honest, I'll miss DeJohn's awlful live-shots. Maybe he should stick with being behind the camera, scratch that- away from cameras in general.

Is this some sort of intellectual exercise? Like if a tree falls in the forest, and no one is there, does it make a noise. Therefore, if a reporter from 42 gets fired, and nobody watches, who cares? Had anybody mentioned Dave DeJohn to me before, I would have thought them to be imitating the legendary Hervé Villechaize. You know. "Tattoo, where can I wash up?" "DeJohn, DeJohn!"

I would be surprised that an anchor would only have a 1 year contract before moving to Omaha. Although it certainly is possible.

Be carefull what you wish for....this would be the perfect opportunity for Calvert "Bud" Collins to suddenly jump from the dead KXVO newscast to the lead anchor position at KPTM.

When were they on the air? Sorry, the names do not ring a bell.

This is great!!!! Hopefully the powers that be at KPTM will realize that Amanda Mueller is heads and tails better at the anchor position and do everything they can to keep her. However, I doubt that this will occur, as having worked with the current management before at the Big 6, R.O. has a nasty habit of chasing off some high class talent; see Marti Van Dorn, now working for ABC News.

...i can place the name Dave DeJohn either. There was a weekend anchor & weekday reporter with the name "Dave"... had the really bad helmet head (or toupee?)... different last name, i thought. same guy?

I remember Marti Van Dorn .. a Google search of her name and 'ABC News" reveals no hits. What does she do there?

operationseng said...

jmsqabq Google search Marti Johnson (her real name) at ABC News. She was a Washington Bureau reporter for ABC, though she has since moved on to other things. She worked at WOWT for a time and was perhaps one of the best newsanchors and talents to come out of Omaha. Too bad the management of Channel 6 didn't have the brains to keep to her around.

I really liked David DeJohn on KPTM-not to mention, aside from Wilson-he's the only male left. Yea, he could sometimes stutter at a breaking news story, but he's better than most I've seen here. I do agree with a fellow poster that Amanda should be the main co-anchor. Aggressive, fake Tracy should only be seen on cable access...

By the way, when Marti anchored at Channel 6 they had their lowest ratings of the last 20 years. Perhaps that is why management did not keep her around.

operationseng said...

Actually, the reason that they did not keep Marti around was because of disagreements with the management at the time. She was a person that, unfortunately for her, spoke her mind. I can attest to this as factual as I was there when this shake up occurred.

you know....I am really disturbed at the majority of your responses. It's obvious to me since you cannot shame her 'performance' - you are now stooping so low as to attack her character. How childish and low - for real. As a viewer, I think Tracy has the "full package." This anchor has brought "class, a heart for people and a level of professionalism" that I believe has been seriously lacking at this station. This girl is going to go far - watch and see. You're going to wish you were a friend vs. an enemy. By the way - why is Tracy being attacked when she wasn't even the one fired? Seems like there's some kind of an agenda here...

jerseyguy said...

Sistatru,
although she may come across on air as "pleasant" try working with her and her husband. It's not pleasant. I'm sorry but Omaha, or really ANY market, is not a place for a primidona attitude. There is alot behind the scenes that you dont know about.

I've seen enough changes over at 42 to make me think, "What the hell are they doing"? I'm sure there were some internal things going on, but strictly from a viewers point of view David DeJohn was one of the few highlights in that show. I like to watch all the channels and he's about as good as any reporter in Omaha (I must confess I've never seen him do a "live shot"). Then I tuned in to see who's left, and well, it's kind of scary. Mostly female, one has crossed eyes and sounds very young; another speaks as though her (very large) nose is blocked and has bags under her eyes, and then there's the weather person's reports that more closely resemble a high school journalism project. And why have all the men left anyway? Matt Myers was interesting, and Dave Hensen(sp?) looked old but did a solid job. Does the boss hate good male reporters? A message to Jerseyguy; maybe what that station needs is someone, ANYONE, to shake things up because 42 went from sucks to megasucks.

ego_bruiser said...

To Rightway about the lack of male presence:
Hanson, Myers and-thankfully- DeJohn were fired. They didn't renew Wysocki's contract when it was up. It just happened that they were all men.
Who is the person to blame for 42's woes? The old News Director. A lot of problems stemmed from the last few duties Doug did for 42.
Firing 2 reporters and a photog to get (pay) Jacim and Dejohn was the worst thing he could have done. If those two never came to Omaha, they would still have all of the dedicated employees that tried to make the station better than it is.

I typed "KPTM" into a search engine and a bunch of pictures of nekkid wimmen jumped out at me.

Mom sent me to my room.

jerseyguy and rightway,

You both said some things that are rather interesting. Jerseyguy, all the viewer knows about a person is what they come across on air. That is all they judge them on, unless they happen to be in a news story and gets interviewed by the anchor or reporter. Smart reporters and anchors realize the support staff that helps them look good and treats them right. That includes showing up at company holiday parties and get togethers to get to know them better in a relaxed setting.

Rightway, you also bring out that there many issues that a person never sees or hears about, as well as producers and editors decisions. I do think that more people need to email or call a station and say I really liked the way Bart Simpson covered the I 80 drug bust accident etc. Too often the stations only here that Homer Simpson acted stupid and to get rid of that blankity blank reporter.

Okay, here's the solution to KPTM's woes: Everything and everyone at KPTM goes...except for the possible exception of Amanda Mueller and Jeff Radcliffe.

Invest in new anchors. Taylor Wilson is as bland as unsweetened oatmeal and Tracy Jacim is a made-up major anchor wannabe-but-can't. She may be pretty, but she can't even read her teleprompter without stumbling. And when she doesn't stumble, she over-emphasizes words and can't engage in exchanges with her co-anchors to save her life.

New Weather and Sports anchors, too. Tyson Pearsall and J.J. Davis belong on a station in a 100+ market--maybe Wichita Falls/Lawton or Dothan, AL. New reporters.

New Set. The one they have now was outdated when they got it.

The Execs at Pappas Telecasting should come to Omaha with a bulldozer and level the entire KPTM/KXVO building and start over from scratch. This may seem extreme, but, c'mon people--these stations are very minor market caliber. Omaha already has a backwards, small-market image. And if the powers that be at Pappas can't recruit decent talent, then it is better NOT to have a local newscast. Honestly, if they were to run EVERYBODY LOVES RAYMOND episodes from 9:00 to 10:00, they would have higher ratings.

As for KXVO...get rid of the 10:00pm newscast. Bad idea. Unnecessary for a market this size. Plus, what they are airing now is GODAWFUL!!!

Dear Ego,

So the rest of us still at KPTM are not dedicated employees? I work my butt off to try and improve the newscast, but have yet to see any clear direction for improvement. I hate to say it but our news managers are about as dim as the Frezzi's on 42's cameras. Have you ever sat in an editorial meeting and listened to what story ideas are brought up? It's like "Dumb and Dumber" on crack. Also, great make-believe about firing people to bring in Dejon and Jacim. The photog was a guy named Justin who didn't have the brains to screw in a light bulb, and the reporter was someone who suffered brain damage and lost her short term memory. I have no idea who the mysterious "second reporter" is. Bottom line: Dejon and Jacim made for some terrific scapegoats, but what happens once they're both gone? Is Amanda Mueller really the station's savior? Seems to me we tried her out already (before jacim arrived) only to lose ratings in February of '05. Remember? But I'm sure Allen Beckner will find someone better, like from another Pappas station in Sioux City or Butte, Montana. There's another winner. Makes "Doug" look like a genius. God, I can't wait for an opening across town. About the only thing good about this hell hole is experience in order to leave.

What happened, Ted. They finally run you off the air? I'm seeing nothing for March anymore? Hopefully you haven't shut down for good.

In response to Skatze. Not everyone works in Omaha because they are loosers. Some of us grew up here and choose to work here. Success is not always in the market size or amount of money you make.
"ooohhh I work in a big market I must be better than everyone else."
How about you get over it!

By the way, not everyone in this market gets on this blog and posts crap about people.

I'm posting today just to respond to you saying all of us in Omaha don't work hard. I work damn hard at my job and choose to live here to be with my family. I could care less if it was in new york or california. People in bigger markets are no better than people in smaller markets. There's blogs just like this one in lots of other cities.

And people here have reported for the today show, weather channel and the early show. In fact just last week there was a local cbs story on the early show. They take those packages from all over the U.S. when there's news going on.

Maybe that was the problem with Tracy here in Omaha. The fact that she came in and did nothing but act better than everyone. There's something to be said for acting like someone's equal even if you've been at better places.
