Can't a Guy Just Have the Newsplex to Himself for Once?

Another of our alert readers poses an interesting question: Why is it that when KETV anchor Rob McCartney has the night off, Julie Cornell usually solos, but when Julie is gone, McCartney almost always gets a substitute co-anchor? This week, for example, McCartney was accompanied by stiff-as-a-board Suzanne Deyo on Monday and Tuesday, and by Brandi Petersen on Wednesday and Thursday.

What is the deal? When McCartney's away, why not pair Cornell with Mike Sigmond or Todd Andrews? Or when Cornell is gone, let McCartney work alone? It's not just a matter of the female subs not adding much to the broadcast, Deyo actually makes things worse with her zombie-like delivery and knack for butchering names. She's a very good reporter, but an anchor she ain't.

In the past KETV has put Tom Elser on set in the absence of Rob McCartney. As far as the female anchor situation goes, Maybe they are "auditioning" Deyo and Brandi for when they decide to pull a Carol Schrader on Julie Cornell. Just a thought!

Seems like obvious sexism to me. The conventional wisdom at KETV seems to be that if you can only have one anchor, make sure it's a woman.

Interestingly, neither of the other two (real) stations do this. When Courtny Gerrish's ball and chain has to solo, they don't stick Rebecca Kleeman in the other seat, nor does KMTV draft Michelle Bandur whenever Sarah Simmons takes the night off.

Many times, using nobody is better than using somebody who sucks. KE has no backup male anchor that roseanne is comfortable with. Are there any good male anchors hanging around town that could be had by Channel 7? Hmmm....

Hmmm. Maybe Travis Justice would "do a Knicely" and move from sports to news.

Could you stand it?

Did you get your last name from a certain anchorman on the Simpsons?
